Not many people would be brave enough to stand up single-handedly to a gang of 16 youths violently attacking a lone man.
But when woman police constable Maggie Chan Wai-man saw that happening to a public housing estate security guard, she showed no hesitation in rushing to the man's rescue.
'I told my mother to call the police if anything happened,' said Ms Chan, 24, who has been in the Force for three years.
'I saw they didn't have any weapons so I decided to run over and reveal my identity.' As soon as Ms Chan yelled out that she was a police officer, the cowardly attackers fled in different directions.
Her brave act was witnessed by several people, including one passer-by who asked for Ms Chan's service number after she had taken the shocked and bruised caretaker back to the Wong Tau Hom Estate office in Lok Fu.
Urban Services Department assistant director Chow Loi wrote to Commissioner of Police Eddie Hui Ki-on to commend Ms Chan's bravery.
