The Preparatory Committee yesterday cleared up confusion on nominations by civil servants to the Selection Committee.

The committee secretariat's deputy director, Fei Fih, said civil servants could participate through whichever channel they thought appropriate.

Some civil servants had been concerned they would have to apply as former political figures to succeed in this sector.

'That is because 60 of the 100 seats allocated for former political figures have already been assigned to the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and National People's Congress local delegates,' said Civil Servants' General Union chairman Cheung Kwok-biu.

He said civil servants should be allowed to stand in the labour sector.

The committee said yesterday the union could try either of the two sectors.
