HEARTS were dumped out of the European Cup Winners' Cup by resurgent Red Star Belgrade after the Yugoslavs held on for a 1-1 draw in Edinburgh to qualify on the away goals rule.

The Tynecastle side, having come away from the first leg with a 0-0 draw made numerous advances on their home turf but could not break the deadlock until a minute before half-time when former Scotland defender Dave McPherson scored. The second-half was a sometimes hectic affair with the visitors knowing they needed only a goal to be in the driving seat. They pressed forward and were duly rewarded when Vinko Marinovic found the back of the net in the 59th minute.

From then on it was relentless pressure from Hearts but the former European champions held firm to take their place in the first round. In Prague, Sparta crushed Northern Ireland's Glentoran 8-0 to advance to the first round of the competition.

Seconds after Glentoran kicked off, Vratislav Lokvenc beat Chris Walker to a header on Zdenek Svoboda's 50-yard pass into the penalty area and Peter Gunda gave Sparta a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the match.

That was the beginning of the end for the Irish side as the floodgates opened.
