FAVOURITES South China suffered an early exit in the President's Cup seven-a-side tournament last night when both of their teams were knocked out by Sing Tao and Golden at the Mongkok Stadium. Uhlsport-Rangers followed the Caroliners out of the competition after losses to Golden (A) and Eastern (B). Both the A and B teams of league champions Instant-Dict, Regional Council Cup winners Sing Tao and Golden advanced to the quarter-finals which will be played tonight at Mongkok. Happy Valley (A) and Eastern (B) also went through. South China (A), the stronger of their two teams, played Sing Tao (A) in their first game last night - their second meeting in eight days after the Regional Cup final where Sing Tao won 3-1. The Tigers edged the Caroliners by 1-0 this time with a goal from Hong Kong national defender Chan Chi-keung in the 15th minute. The Caroliners suffered their second defeat when their Team B lost 3-2 on sudden-death penalties to Golden (B) - after a 0-0 draw in the 20 minutes of normal time. South China chairman Albert Hung Cho-hong said: 'Our target is not the President's Cup as it is only a seven-a-side tournament. I don't mind we have lost.' In other matches, Happy Valley (A) beat Eastern (A) 2-0 - both goals by their Brazilian imports Lauro Camargo and Silvio Wielewski. Rangers (A) were held by Golden (A) to a 1-1 draw. Rangers were eventually eliminated by 1-0 in the shootout after Wong Chun-yu missed his spot kick, while Golden striker Lee Bullen's went in. Eastern (B) advanced to the quarter-final by beating Rangers (B) 1-0 with a spectacular long-distance lob by Poon Man-tik. Team B of league and Viceroy Cup champions Instant-Dict, who suffered a 7-1 thrashing by Shanghai Shenhua in Wednesday's Asian Club Championship first round, first-leg match, defeated Happy Valley (B) by 1-0 with a header from Paul Foster two mintues from time. Today's quarter-finals are - Happy Valley (A) v Instant-Dict (A), Golden (A) v Sing Tao (A), Eastern (B) v Instant-Dict (B) and Sing Tao (B) v Golden (B).
