A convicted former police senior inspector appeared in court yesterday in an attempt to clear his name.

Petrus Yau Pui-tak, 41, lost his job after a magistrate found him guilty of nine counts of theft and one of storing fireworks without a licence. He was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for eight months.

A search of Yau's Fanling office last year had yielded six expired warrant cards and four packets of fireworks, the Crown said. Officers also seized an expired warrant card in his car and another at his Yuen Long home.

Mr Justice Frank Stock yesterday overturned the fireworks conviction after concluding the trial magistrate, Susana Remedios, had used faulty logic in reaching her decision. He reserved judgment on the theft charges.
