MariGroup eyes Asian partners for revolutionary waste control system
Goran Sundholm, a multiawarded entrepreneur recognised in 2002 for the highest number of patents in Finland, speaks of his inventions in plain terms. He jokingly describes the MetroTaifun system as a big vacuum cleaner and Elsi Smart Floor as a big touchpad. The two are products of MariGroup, where Sundholm is CEO and chairman of the board.
"Product development is the most important thing," Sundholm says. "Every time we meet a customer, we have something new."
Reflecting such technological integrity, MetroTaifun is the next generation of the Taifun system, an industry-leading technology managed by MariGroup subsidiary MariMatic. Taifun has been installed in slaughterhouses across more than 40 countries since 1983.
Launched in 2010, MetroTaifun has automated collection and waste sorting functionalities that reduce the carbon footprint of municipal solid waste by 50 per cent. In 2013, it became operational in Saudi Arabia's Al-Masjid al-Haram, the largest mosque in the world where about 900 tonnes of waste are collected daily.
MetroTaifun has the potential for exponential growth in Asia, and the product is already involved in design and tender phases of several projects in the mainland, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. By May, the system will be installed in Soul of the City, a landmark development in Zhuhai. MariMatic has designed an underground pipe network to collect an estimated daily waste of 12 tonnes from 542 inlets throughout the estate.
"MetroTaifun allows much tighter integration in planned communities," Sundholm says. "More importantly, it elevates liveability in urban environments by reducing the odour, noise and particle emissions from waste."
MetroTaifun can be installed twice as fast as conventional systems and substantially reduces lifecycle costs. Through joint-venture partnerships, MariGroup aims to localise future installations and system maintenance across Asia.
"Given the enormity of waste collection and disposal globally, demand is rising fast for MetroTaifun," Sundholm says.
"We have a system behind each product, so potential partners can rely on us for sustained growth in this robust market."
