A Hong Kong-registered vessel, the Mineral Century, rescued 54 crew from a burning livestock-carrier in the Indian Ocean recently. The Mineral Century, a Capesize bulk carrier managed by Anglo-Eastern Ship Management, was bound from Haypoint in Australia to Rotterdam laden with coal. It went to the rescue of the crew of the Panama-registered Uniceb, which was on a voyage from Fremantle to Aqaba with a cargo of sheep. The Mineral Century spotted distress flares followed by a distress call from the Uniceb, 16 miles away, on the night of September 1. Communications were established and the rescue was carried out soon after the Uniceb's crew abandoned the ship and took to one lifeboat and three liferafts.
