Australia outlines reforms

Australian Transport Minister John Sharp has outlined the government's agenda for reform of the waterfront, signaling the introduction of competition among ports and labour reform as the main focus, the Australian Financial Review reports.

The Maritime Union of Australia controls waterfront labour, requiring all maritime workers to be members of the union. That effectively stops new stevedoring companies starting. The government's shipping reform group would meet for the first time this week, the paper said.
