HORACE KNIGHT, the executive director of the Vocational Training Council, retires next year after 27 years' public service. Mr Knight would not say whether there had been a difference of opinion between him and council chairman Samuel Wong Ping-wai over the council's work. But he said: 'We would be lying if we say that we are each other's best friends.' He added: 'Anyway, I'm not dying to go in mid-97. I am leaving because I will be 64 next year which is beyond the retirement age of 60.' Mr Wong refused to comment on Mr Knight's departure. He said: 'The council will not localise the post deliberately but would choose a local should all other qualifications be the same among the possible candidates.' The council will appoint a headhunting firm to find a suitable candidate. Mr Knight's contract was due to expire on July 31 next year.
