Police swoop nets 21 triad suspects

POLICE arrested 21 people believed to be members of the Sun Yee On triad society during a 24-hour raid which ended at 5 am yesterday.

Senior staff officer of the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau (OCTB), Detective Senior Superintendent Albert Kwok Cho-kuen, said the territory-wide operation was a follow-up to last month's arrest of 11 people, including two senior detective inspectors.

''We targeted a particular faction of Sun Yee On in which members are believed to be acting as bouncers of entertainment establishments such as karaoke bars and nightclubs mostly in Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai.

''Some of them are also believed to be providing valet parking for customers of these premises,'' he said.

Officers, led by Detective Superintendent Bob Youill, raided 10 locations throughout Hongkong which included nightclubs in Tsim Sha Tsui and a private club in Repulse Bay.

Twenty men and a woman aged from 16 to 45 were still being detained for questioning yesterday.
