A working party meeting on Urban Councillors' allowances will be cancelled today after four of the six members quit.

Party chairman Manuel Chan Tim-shing described the move by the members to resign as irresponsible.

He said an independent review commission on allowances for councillors was about to start work. It was set up after controversy over the amount of public money spent on overseas trips.

'As chairman of the party, I regret they have made such an irresponsible decision. This sends a very negative message,' Mr Chan said.

He said Steven Hung Chung-fun left the working party in May, followed by Francis Tang Chi-ho and Christopher Chung Shu-kun in July and this month.

Yesterday, another member - Lam Man-fai - also announced he had quit. Kwok Bit-chun, the only remaining member apart from Mr Chan, said he was unable to attend the meeting.
