CITIBANK yesterday opened a representative office in Guangzhou, bringing its network in China to five offices, the largest among US banks. The biggest bank in the United States in terms of assets, Citibank already has full branches in Shanghai and Shenzhen and representative offices in Beijing and Xiamen. The bank plans to upgrade its Guangzhou office into a branch and expand its operations to other coastal cities this year. The bank's chief representative in Guangzhou is Mr Andrew Tung. Citibank opened its first China branch in Shanghai in 1902 and before the communist takeover was one of the major foreign players in the country, with 14 branches in nine cities.
