With reference to Carol Brown's letter headlined, 'Littered' (South China Morning Post, August 22), I would like to explain the situation of littering of real estate posters along Lok King Street, Lok Lam Road and Lok Fung Path and surrounding areas in Fo Tan, Sha Tin.
Cleaning staff of the nine districts within the Regional Council area have all along been taking the same course of action against the illegal display of posters including the immediate removal of posters, prosecution of illegal poster displayers who are caught red-handed, and instituting against the beneficiary parties upon securing sufficient evidence from the posters displayed.
Many estate agents in the Fo Tan area affix their posters to retaining walls, lamp-posts, railings and the backs of traffic signs.
The problem is worse during weekends and public holidays. A Regional Services Department poster removal gang has therefore been formed to cope with the acute situation.
In the past four months, our department prosecuted 16 offenders including displayers and beneficiary parties of the posters, and removed more than 12,000 commercial posters in and around Fo Tan. We will continue to take enforcement action.
I am grateful to Ms Brown for her expression of concern.
