As Capvis Equity Partners celebrates the 10th anniversary of its representative office in Shanghai, the leading Swiss private equity firm has unveiled plans to strengthen its presence in Asia.

"We look forward to expanding our non-European investment base and see tremendous potential in Asia, particularly China, where wealth creation is enormous," says Daniel Flaig, Capvis' managing partner. "In addition to being a potential source of capital for our forthcoming funds, Asian investors are showing interest in becoming strategic buyers of our portfolio companies."

Seeing bright prospects in the region, the company aims to build up its name and raise investor awareness through Capvis Shanghai. Set up in 2005, the office provides operational support to Capvis' portfolio companies and is used for due diligence of potential acquisitions.

In operation for 25 years, Capvis has carved a distinct market position by going after a niche underserved by major financial institutions. The company serves as the sole adviser to the Capvis funds, which acquire substantial equity stakes in growth-oriented, mid-sized firms. These so-called "hidden champions" are global market leaders in niche segments but are unknown to the general public.

"Key to our growth is our clear and consistent strategy," Flaig says. "We have always invested in well-positioned mid-market companies that serve as the backbone of the economy." Since 1990, Capvis has invested more than Euro5 billion (HK$43.2 billion) across 47 transactions. To date, its portfolio companies are primarily into high-value manufacturing and precision engineering, and are based in German-speaking Europe.

Having this singular focus, Capvis has gained an excellent understanding of issues facing mid-sized firms. Capvis' business insights bring a higher level of performance to its portfolio companies, thereby delivering significantly higher returns on the capital employed.

"Capvis stands for capital with vision," Flaig says. "We act as a reliable and value-creating partner to our portfolio companies with the primary goal of bringing long-term viability to their operations."
