After years of being out in the cold, frozen organic food has made its debut in Hong Kong. The Frozen Flash selection is shipped in by Health Gate's Anna Chen, who was under pressure from her regulars to supply more than quick-fix tinned and boxed food. Now that she has doubled her space in the Hung Tak Building in Central, Chen is able to fit in the two double freezers she needs. The Frozen Flash foods are organic, low-fat and non-dairy. The selection of 36 products includes pies, full meals, burgers, sausages, spring rolls, fries, non-dairy ice-cream, and wheat-free waffles. A 10 per cent launch discount is being offered for every purchase of any 12 frozen packs. Tel: 2545-2286. Time for tacos Times Square's Mexican restaurant, La Placita, has spawned what it claims is Asia's first taqueria - an outlet specialising in tacos. Tacos are made with soft corn or flour tortillas, a staple Mexican unleavened bread made of corn or flour. They are described by Mexicans as a way of life rather than a snack. A tortilla machine has been imported for the purpose. Tacos Taqueria La Placita opens on Tuesday, on the ground floor of the Houng Sun Building at 45-47 Carnarvon Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. The taqueria, a take-away outlet decorated in the same Mexican style as its mother restaurant, will serve a wide range of tacos, including beef, pork, fish, refried beans and chicken. The Mexican equivalents of mustard and tomato sauce will also be served, including fresh tomato salsa, chilli salsa and guacamole. On the menu, too, are Mexican summer drinks, including rice water and Jamaica water made with dried hibiscus petals. Tel: 2366-9466. Bread delivery The bread maestros at Sai Kung's Ali-Oli Bakery have released their new home-delivery price list. While the menu is as extensive as before, prices are about five per cent higher. 'We've tried to keep the increases in check,' says Ali-Oli owner Nicholas Wilson. Bread and pies ($20 for medium, $74 for a family size) are most in demand by the home-delivery crowd. Pies range from steak and kidney to curried mince with potato. Sweet pies and pastries include apple strudel ($90), cherry pie ($76), chocolate chip cookies ($3.90 each) and lamingtons ($8 each). Among the 27 kinds of bread are cheese, onion and bacon loaf ($13.50), and Scandinavian rye ($21). Frozen meals include shepherd's pie ($38) and cheese and broccoli soup ($20). Deliveries to Kowloon are on Thursdays, to Hong Kong on Fridays and to the New Territories on Tuesdays. The minimum order for home delivery is $300. Tel: 2792-2655.
