A Thai tourist was awakened one night by a naked man tearing at her underwear, a rape trial heard yesterday.

  The mother of two had come to Hong Kong to see her twin sister but limited space had forced her to spend the night with family friends.

  On March 9, the alleged victim, 21, her twin, her brother-in-law and some of his friends gathered at a flat for a karaoke session.

  Businessman Wong Kwong-yick, who denies raping the tourist, had also been invited by the flat's owner.

  The alleged victim said she sang but declined the beer the men were drinking.

   As the night progressed, Wong, 29, tried to get closer to her, the court heard.

  'He asked me if I was cold,' she said.

   'He tried to give me some impression that he worried about me and tried to hold my hand.'    But the High Court was told the woman rebuffed his advances.

    When her sister and brother-in-law got up to leave, she asked if she could go with them.

    Her twin said there was no spare room at her flat and asked her to stay at their friend's flat.

   Just after 3 am, the alleged victim turned in for the night.

   The court was told she was awakened by Wong in her room and had drifted back to sleep after ordering him to leave.

   But the woman later awoke suddenly when she felt a body pressed against hers, prosecutor Francis Lo alleged.

  Wong was said to have returned to her room naked and yanked back the covers and to have been lying on top of her, pulling at her pants.

  'I was so shocked that I couldn't say a word,' the woman told the court.

   'I tried to struggle, but he was quite strong.'    The court heard that by the time she managed to wriggle free, Wong had already forced himself on her.

  The trial continues before Deputy Judge Wayne Wilson.
