Stress of dock could prove fatal for Tan, doctors warn
The stress of a long trial could have been a death sentence to George Tan, doctors have claimed.
He suffers from a serious heart condition and could end up serving his sentence in a hospital ward.
Three distinguished doctors told the judge Tan's condition would be greatly helped if he was granted regular access to his family. He has been in custody since March but has been receiving treatment in the custodial ward of Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
During yesterday's High Court hearing, Tan was seen swallowing tablets to reduce the workload on his heart.
Dr Paul Oldershaw, a heart specialist, said the former Carrian boss has only one chance in five of surviving until 1999. He suffered a heart attack seven years ago and became prone to sudden losses of consciousness.
His condition deteriorated but has now stabilised because he is taking drugs.
Dr Oldershaw said Tan began suffering from unstable angina - pain which can be brought on by stress - the day after being taken into custody. His symptoms are stress-related and any extra pressure could lead to sudden death, he said.
