At least 10 migrant workers building Sichuan's Baozhushan Hydro Station have been killed in a cable car accident, the Hong Kong China News Agency reported yesterday. One worker was seriously injured and two more were missing after the accident, which happened on September 9 in the province's Yinlai City, the agency reported. It said the 10 workers were killed as they were returning to work in the morning. Thirteen workers went into a cable car, but the cable broke, sending the workers plunging 30 to 40 metres into the Yuqi River below. Six of the 13 were reported to have died immediately. Two bodies were recovered downstream later and two died in hospital. Two cable operators were also seriously hurt in the accident, which authorities were still investigating, the agency said. Migrant workers have little labour protection in China and their families usually receive minimal compensation in industrial accidents.
