Since it ventured internationally in 2007, Kunhwa Engineering & Consulting is quickly building a reputation on the global scene.

In a short period, South Korea's top-tier engineering consultancy company made it to the Top 225 International Design Firms for 2014 published by New York-based Engineering News-Record. The company ranked 178th last year, a marked improvement from its 196th position in 2013.

"Our success has been tremendous," says chairman and CEO Hwang Kwang-ung, who has received several management awards in South Korea. "The quality and competence of our engineers allow us to think outside the box - always careful with the details without losing grasp of the big picture."

Kunhwa's commitment to engineering excellence has improved the lives of many communities worldwide, especially in Asia. With more than two decades of expertise in building South Korea's iconic projects, Kunhwa today is involved in 36 undertakings across 16 countries. The company covers consulting services, feasibility studies, design, supervision, project management, testing and commissioning. Kunhwa is behind the Siem Reap Sewerage System and Improvement of Siem Reap River project in Cambodia, the Bacolod-Silay Airport Access Road project in the Philippines and the Nha Be New Urban Centre development in Vietnam, among others.

Looking forward, Kunhwa will venture beyond traditional civil engineering into the creation of sustainable green energy through solar and wind power. The company will also expand its overseas business to 30 per cent of revenues as it embarks on new markets in the Middle East, Africa, South America and Asia, including China. To support its international growth, Kunhwa plans to open more branches overseas to provide a faster and reliable response to infrastructure initiatives in different countries.

"Localisation is our next big challenge to help us grow and expand across our target areas," Hwang says. "Our future strength lies in collaborating with local engineers and companies that complement our expertise."
