Here is good news for the whole family, in fact everyone, living in Kwai Tsing. The festive spirit will be strong in the district, thanks to a subsidy of over $1.5 million set aside by the Regional Council for various district-wide activities. A sum of about $531,000 has been allocated for the Kwai Tsing Sports Festival '96 and the 10th Kwai Tsing District Arts Festival. Faces should light up at the news that an extra $300,000 has been set aside for the district's festival lighting programmes, and more than $150,000 for Kwai Tsing's Lunar New Year Carnival. Cheng Kong-yu, deputy festival co-ordinator of the Regional Services Department, said in approving the applications for funds from various bodies in Kwai Tsing, proposals that seemed unduly high in cost had to be trimmed. Under the District Festival Subsidy Scheme for 1996/97, an amount of about $1.9 million was allocated to Kwai Tsing district in support of festival activities. So far $360,000 has been committed, leaving $1.5 million for new applications.
