Executive Councillor Vincent Cheng Hoi-chuen yesterday played down the possibility of a conflict of interest over his participation in the Selection Committee. Asked to comment on the committee's selection of the provisional legislature, Mr Cheng said: 'It is a short-lived body which lasts only for a year. 'The most important thing for me in joining the Selection Committee is to elect a chief executive who can lead Hong Kong in the face of the challenges five years ahead and into the 21st century.' Mr Cheng said he did not think his stance contradicted the Government's position that the provisional legislature was unnecessary. Another Exco member seeking a seat on the Selection Committee, Raymond Ch'ien Kuo-fung, said it was too early to talk about quitting the inner cabinet. 'If I find myself in difficulties carrying out my responsibilities in a sincere and credible manner, of course I need to take action. But I do not see this happening now,' Mr Ch'ien said.
