Scores of doctors and nurses were rushed to Yan Chai Hospital's accident and emergency unit minutes after being alerted to the tragedy. 'At 9.15 we received the alert from police that the gas victims were coming, six of them with no respiration and only one of them breathing,' said Dr Wong Kwok-leung. Dr Wong, chief of service in the Accident and Emergency Department, said a disaster contingency plan was activated. 'Extra doctors and nurses from internal medicine, paediatrics, intensive care and surgery came down. Our major concern was for the first hour - doing resuscitation for so many people simultaneously, we would need extra doctors,' he said. 'Six of the patients did not have a heartbeat. For the next 15 minutes, we got the correct drugs lined up, CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] and ventilation units. Unfortunately, they didn't need it.'
