More than 20 stalls were set up at Baptist University to offer bargains to students and raise money for activities.
Products included sportswear, computers, watches, handbags, skin-care items, pagers and credit cards.
'I just wanted to capture the discounts offered by the different retailers. Things are cheaper here,' said one student browsing among the stalls in the Sir Run Run Shaw Building.
Another student said: 'I don't have any interest in these booths because they just sell the same products each year. Maybe they could contact some publishers or record companies and we could buy some low-priced textbooks and compact discs.' Dora Cheung Man-ling, general manager of Value Point, which sold sportswear, said: 'It is the second time we've set up booths here. We do not expect to earn much money but hope to give some special offers to the students.' The sale was organised by four departments - China studies, physics, chemistry and religion and philosophy.
'We need a huge fund for the exchange programme, academic week, musical activities and the basketball championships during the next year,' said Ho Ka-ki, of the China Studies Society committee.
