About 5,000 youngsters are expected to benefit from a sports promotion scheme for schools. The Urban Council and the Hong Kong Schools Sports Association have launched the 1996-97 School Sports Promotion Scheme for youngsters aged nine to 15. The scheme will cover tennis, squash, fencing and athletics, for which most schools lack training grounds and facilities. To remedy the situation, the Urban Council will provide grounds and training equipment. A council spokesman said that through training, competition and camps, sports associations would identify talented athletes for further long-term training programmes. Enrolment is now open until October 12, but must be done through schools.
