MUSIC Car Button Cloth. Lemonheads (East West Records) You remember the Lemonheads, the band with the pretty lead singer who covered that Simon and Garfunkel hit from The Graduate. To be honest, I thought they had split up, especially as lead singer Evan Dando was recently seen clinging to the coat-tails of the Gallagher brothers at Oasis post-gig parties.
Well, I was wrong. Dando and his fellow Lemonheads had been busy in the recording studio. A great tribute to the three-minute pop song, Car Button Cloth is an object lesson in how to grab the attention with a natty singalong chorus. If all you are after is breezy fun, then this is the album for you bubbly groovers.
BOOKS Elton, My Elton. Gary Clarke Smith (Gryphon Books) This is the sort of book famous people have nightmares about: when an ex-lover in need of a few bob decides to spill the beans and cashes in on your once-meaningful relationship.
Still, Gary Clarke has written an oddly compelling tale of life at home and on the road with Elton John. To his credit Clarke kept the intimate details of the bedroom to a minimum. It makes for a less entertaining read but it shows that he retained a bit of dignity.
However, Clarke does let us into secrets like Elton's penchant for a snort of cocaine and his tendency to act like a spoiled child, as well as plenty of showbiz gossip. Yummy.
For soccer fans, there are also tales of Elton's involvement with Watford FC (he was a director and injected oodles of hard-earned cash into what was, and remains, a poor soccer team), and for music fans, it provides an insight into Elton's creative process.
Tasty fare for the gossip-hungry and those fascinated by what makes a star shine.
