Emirates, the international airline of the United Arab Emirates, has underlined its challenge to become one of the world's leading airlines by winning six premier Airline of the Year awards. The Dubai-based carrier also collected three runner-up prizes in the annual poll by Executive Travel magazine. Emirates was voted Best Long-haul Airline and Best Middle East Airline and was second to Swissair as Airline of the Year. The carrier won top prize for food and wine, inflight entertainment, cabin staff and inflight magazine. It was also runner-up for best first class and best economy class. Emirates' chairman, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum, said: 'This is the third year in a row that we have come out on top in these awards and it is very gratifying indeed. But we will not rest on our laurels.' The latest awards bring to 93 the number of accolades earned by Emirates since its inception in 1985. 'These awards reflect our continuous commitment to provide the best possible service to every single customer,' said Emirates' group managing director, Maurice Flanagan. Emirates has opened a refurbished 24-hour business-class lounge at Dubai International Airport due to the increase in business travellers using the airline.
