Britain will be notified of the final draft of legislation covering People's Liberation Army troops in Hong Kong by the end of the year, a Joint Liaison Group source said yesterday.
The law is being drafted by the Chinese authorities.
The source said Britain would be told informally of the completion of the law, but added that there was no need for British approval.
China, however, would seek to consult the Preparatory Committee and some Hong Kong people.
Responding to criticism of an earlier decision that PLA soldiers who breached the law might be tried in mainland courts, the source said: 'We have got to listen to the views of various sectors and see what we should do.' The source expressed confidence that the adaptation of laws would be completed before the handover.
