A rare and valuable blue-and-yellow macaw named Baby has escaped from a Macdonnell Road flat and was last seen heading towards Government House.
Worth at least $10,000, the bird's body is more than 60 centimetres long and its wingspan greater than that of a large eagle.
Baby's owner, Lisa Cheung Chung Lai-sung, said the bird's 'boyfriend' - dubbed Ah-wat - was upset by the escape. Mrs Cheung appealed for anyone who had seen the bird to call her on 2530-2788.
'I've had her more than 10 years,' she said. 'She has a laugh like a human.' Mrs Cheung said the bird escaped when the family's amah accidently left a door open. At first it settled nearby but, just as Mrs Cheung and her husband, Kalam Cheung Ka-lam, edged close to grasp the runaway, it was startled into flight by loud cries from nearby parakeets.
Blue-and-yellow macaws are native to South America. Baby lives on a diet of fruit, bread and biscuits.
Mrs Cheung said if Baby had found a home with someone who was taking care of her, her mind would be at rest.
