But do not reach instinctively for your passport. Getting away from it all does not necessarily mean getting away from Hongkong.

There are many options for weekends in the territory, where you can escape to peace and quiet without the hassle of planes and customs declarations.

So where do you go and what do you do? For those who want to retain a modicum of luxury, there are a few hotels that are not perched precariously on top of shopping centres or surrounded by congested traffic.

On Lantau you have a choice of two hotels, both situated in the relaxed environment of Mui Wo (Silvermine Bay).

There is the Silvermine Beach Hotel (tel: 984-8295), which is the larger and more sophisticated of the two, boasting a Chinese restaurant, coffee shop and swimming pool; and the Mui Wo Inn (984-8597), smaller and cosier with barbecue facilities.
