YOUNG people of Hongkong and Guangzhou will soon be getting together to crusade for a better environment.
The environment group, Friends of the Earth (FoE), is to launch the Young Ecologists Service (YES) Camps programme in conjunction with the Guangzhou Environmental Bureau.
Through the camps, FoE will promote environmental protection and facilitate exchanges between young people of Hongkong and Guangzhou on the subject of conservation.
According to Ms Karen Lam, public relations officer of FoE, the idea was raised during a visit to Guangzhou in November 1992 by FoE Vice-Chairman and environmental education specialist, Ms Mei Ng.
During the visit, which saw several meetings with Guangzhou officials and members of the Academic Society, environmental youth programmes in Hongkong and Guangzhou were discussed.
The parties resolved to work together to inform young people on both sides of the border about their respective environmental protection initiatives. This meeting of minds provided the inspiration for FoE's YES Camp.
The programme will be in three stages. The first is ''Help The Earth Speak Out'', an essay competition.
