The Government yesterday described a range of initiatives - including a $50 million support scheme - to encourage the territory's transition from a manufacturing to service economy. Denise Yue Chung-yee, Secretary for Trade and Industry, reaffirmed the Government's commitment to assisting the move into hi-tech, higher value-added production. Miss Yue, who was speaking before the Legislative Council panel on trade and industry, said the Massachusetts Institute of Technology industrial performance centre had been commissioned to study the territory's long-term industrial development prospects. The Government's programme and companies' grant eligibility under the support scheme would be advertised. 'We will not designate certain trades as beneficiaries. We will invite applications . . . I do not think anyone will be neglected or omitted.'
