Many people descended into a sorrowful silence, when they learned of the death of David Chan Yuk-cheung.
The demonstration to show the Japanese that the Chinese had a rightful claim to the Daioyu Islands cost the valuable life of a protester. My first thought was, 'What folly'.
However, after I had had time to reflect on what happened, I realised I was wrong. Asked if David Chan had paid too high a price for his protest, his sister was reported as saying that it depended. Each person placed a different value on his or her life.
That comment made me think more about the meaning of life.
A person's life is not judged by the number of days that person is on this planet. It is not how long we stay here that matters, but what we do with the time available to us. We can get satisfaction from our lives only when we try to achieve our goals.
I admire the protesters for what they did.
