As one of the most prominent and longest-operating local air conditioning and refrigeration companies in the Philippines, Concepcion Industrial Corp (CIC) understands the Filipino consumer by heart.
The company has established its track record by introducing automatic timers into air conditioning units, knowing that Filipino families switch between air conditioning and fans throughout the night to save on electricity. CIC also launched refrigerators with larger freezer compartments as many families use them for business.
Such intimate knowledge of its target consumers has driven CIC's phenomenal growth. From an air conditioning and refrigeration enterprise when it started 52 years ago, the company has progressed into a solutions provider covering a wide range of products, from kitchen and laundry appliances to building components such as escalators and elevators.
"It's a strategic move to really define ourselves in this marketplace," says CEO Raul Joseph Concepcion. "The Philippines is growing and we want to fulfil the requirements of the market as different segments emerge."
The company started with a distribution licensing agreement with American air conditioning giant Carrier in 1962 and, through the years, has gained the trust of other global brands such as Kelvinator and Toshiba. CIC also manufactures its own Condura label to offer air conditioning units and refrigerators specifically designed for Filipino consumers.
Today, the company focuses on two core businesses - consumer appliances and building industrial solutions through its long-time subsidiaries Concepcion-Carrier Air Conditioning and Concepcion Durables.
In recent years, CIC has expanded its offerings through its partnership with Chinese appliance manufacturing giant Midea to form Concepcion Midea Philippines (CMIP). CIC has also collaborated with business solutions pioneer United Technologies to establish Concepcion Otis Philippines (COPI).
CMIP has widened CIC's consumer product portfolio to include microwave ovens, washing machines, water dispensers and rice cookers.
Meanwhile, the acquisition of a majority stake in Otis E&M through COPI allows CIC's building and industrial solutions group to integrate more products in line with the Philippines' future growth. CIC is exploring synergies in this area, such as automated systems for fire, security and lighting for
buildings, to stay ahead of market developments and offer end-to-end, value-added solutions.
With market intelligence, close ties with local distributors and a highly skilled human resource, CIC continues to help international brands penetrate the local market.
"We invite companies to bring their brands here and build with us capabilities and foundations beyond what the market requires," Concepcion says. "We're excited to form long-term relationships with those who share our vision of becoming a significant player in the region."
