Better bus service planned

We were concerned to learn of the alleged unreliability of our Central to Jardine's Lookout service 511 (South China Morning Post, October 8).

Investigation has revealed that whilst there are indeed problems associated with the route, there is no evidence to suggest undue unreliability. For example, in the week commencing September 30, 95 per cent of all scheduled journeys were operated on time and there were no missing trips. Given that the service penetrates a section of Central which is particularly adversely affected by recent Airport-Railway related roadworks, the route's schedule adherence is notably respectable.

That said, there is clearly a need to improve the general attractiveness of the 511. We do recognise that the frequency of service falls below a minimum level and by way of explanation, we might point out that the current timetable was inherited from another operator.

As for the future, we are pleased to confirm our intention to merge routes 11 and 511 with the aim of providing a reliable high frequency bus service for the residents of Tai Hang Drive, Chun Fai Road and Moorsom Road. In fact, we concur with your correspondent's view that such an action plan is necessary to enhance our competitiveness and are firmly committed to its expeditious execution.

We would like to thank F.M. Hermann for taking the time and trouble to air his opinions and for allowing us the opportunity to explain our position.
