English Premier League strugglers Coventry and Southampton played out a 1-1 draw at Coventry's Highfield Road ground yesterday.

It was a point gained for the Sky Blues who equalised through Dion Dublin's scrambled effort in the final minute.

Southampton had gone ahead through Matt Le Tissier in the 17th minute. The shared points leave the two level on six points and squarely in the danger zone. Last season Coventry barely escaped the drop on goal difference thanks to a draw on the last day of the season.

That was the closest they had come to relegation in their 30-year stay in the top flight. But on the evidence of the first quarter of this season it will be another long, hard struggle for Ron Atkinson's men, despite a huge outlay in transfer fees over his 18-month tenure. Coventry are second bottom and Southampton third bottom. Each side has just one win from nine games played. In the First Division yesterday the Potteries derby ended all square as Port Vale held visitors Stoke City 1-1. And strugglers Southend earned a point at home to seventh-placed Wolves with 1-1 effort.
