Star TV completes deal with Measat
Star TV is making its first move into the Malaysian satellite television market.
The Hong Kong subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp said yesterday it had reached a deal with Malaysia East Asia Satellite (Measat) to deliver five channels.
They will form part of a package available on Malaysia's first direct-to-user subscription satellite service Astro.
Star Sports, Star Plus, Star Movies, Star Movies Asia and Channel (V) are to be added to the 15 television and eight radio channels offered by Astro, which started broadcasting two weeks ago.
Star TV has not found a way round Malaysia's strict regulation of advertising and a spokesman said the channels would be commercial-free. Revenue will come from subscription.
The broadcast of the channels will also be time-delayed to allow Measat to check if any material needs editing before transmission.
