The Powersoft business unit of Sybase has previewed some Internet-enabling technologies to enhance its range of code development, database and server tools.

  Colin Png, regional technical evangelist for Powersoft, demonstrated the Internet Developer Toolkit - an accompaniment to PowerBuilder 5.0 - to Sybase developers, customers and resellers in Hong Kong.

  The session was one of a series of Internet-friendly announcements from Sybase that will culminate in the unveiling next month of a new development environment for Web mastering, NetImpact Studio.

  Sybase had planned to keep NetImpact Studio secret until the scheduled launch in April, but a leak to the trade press in the United States forced its hand.

  Mr Png said Sybase was prepared to preview the toolkit for PowerBuilder 5.0, aimed at existing users of the client/server development environment.

  'Microsoft and Borland have pushed out brand-new standalone products to put data on the Internet,' Mr Png said.

  'But with the new PowerBuilder plug-ins, you can use existing software, existing applications and existing tools to do the same.

  'PowerBuilder will have, in fact it already has, Internet capabilities.'   Mr Png said many people had misguided notions about the biggest expectations of the Internet.

  'HTML (hyperText markup language) with animation and graphics is not the big challenge facing the Internet,' he said. 'It's doing business on the Internet that most people are worried about.'   He said Sybase's entire product range would be updated with new plug-ins in the next three months to enable databases to store HTML.

 'A Web server now is just managing your HTML files in a hierarchical structure on a hard disk.

 'With our new tools, you can store HTML in a database which means faster access first of all and better security measures.'   He said this would also liven up static Web sites by giving Web browsers access to the genuine live information residing in a database.

  This will be achieved with a NetImpact Dynamo program, an addition to Sybase's SQL Anywhere Professional.

  Mr Png said web.pb was the most exciting part of the toolkit for PowerBuilder. It delivered genuine 'thin client' architecture, he said.
