The point that knowing how to swim, and swim well, is a life-saving advantage was made at the opening event of the Yan Chai Hospital Lim Por Yen Secondary School swimming gala.

The gala, at Kwai Shing Swimming Pool, started with a demonstration of life-saving skills by six student lifeguards.

The aim of the display was to impress upon the students the importance of basic swimming skills for anyone, as well as show off the skills of those trained to help in case of an emergency.

When the meeting started, the spectators became more boisterous, cheering and applauding the teams during the races.

The swimmers turned in some excellent performances. Even the less experienced competitors, who were falling behind during the races, showed great sporting spirit by somehow making it to the end of the race.

In the Girls' Grade A event, Form Seven student Lee Hiu-fai set two new records, in the 50 m and 100 m breaststroke. She also finished first in the individual medley. Form Seven student Lam Chui-yan also broke two records - in the 200 m freestyle and the 50 m butterfly.

In the Boys' Grade B, Chan Hiu-yeung won three golds, in the 50 m, 100 m freestyle and individual medley. Lam Sai-kit won the 50 m, 100 m breaststroke and individual medley.
