Tung manifesto preaches Chinese cultural virtues
Shipping magnate Tung Chee-hwa has called for the preservation of the virtues of Chinese culture to help strengthen society.
In his 18-page manifesto, Mr Tung lamented: 'We seem to have become less aware of Chinese culture, values, and history.
'All of these are important to foster better understanding with the mainland as we become a Special Administrative Region,' he said.
The 59-year-old tycoon said Hong Kong people should put less emphasis on their individual rights.
Instead, people should attach greater importance to their obligations so that Hong Kong could emerge from the transition in unity, Mr Tung said.
'We need to continue to preserve the virtues of Chinese culture while at the same time assimilating the knowledge and experience of the West,' he said.
'Combining the best of the East and the West would make each and every one of us a better person and in turn make our society that much stronger,' he said.
