With rather less fuss than there was two years ago, IBM has brought out the OS/2 Warp 4 - codenamed Merlin - the latest in its IBM PC operating systems.

In those two years, however, much has changed. Not only has Microsoft brought out Windows 95, but the Internet has risen to an unheard of importance. This has had an extraordinary effect on IBM - the company that was once the only household name among computer manufacturers.

The general manager for software and networking for greater China, Susan Shuck, said there had been many changes in the 20 years she had been at IBM. 'It is difficult to imagine a company of this size able to have the same strategy for hardware and software in all the areas that it covers. Network computing changes all this,' she said.

Indeed, IBM was quick to jump on the idea of networking.

Vice-president for personal software products John Soyring said IBM had been talking to Sun Microsystems, creator of Java, about licensing the product two years ago, well before most people had even heard of it.

Now Java is built into the new Warp OS - the first operating system, Mr Soyring emphasises - to offer it.

Unlike Microsoft, which was slow to embrace the Internet and the concept of networking, IBM seems to be pushing the network with considerable energy.
