Police yesterday foiled a showdown between two groups of triads over the control of funeral services in the New Territories.

They arrested 46 men in a coach at the Fu Shan Crematorium in Sha Tin and six others nearby.

The group were believed to be members of the Wo Shing Wo triad waiting for a rival faction from the same gang, police said.

The trouble was said to have been prompted by a dispute involving two funeral homes.

Police said competition had prompted a series of incidents including criminal damage, arson, criminal intimidation and assaults in Hunghom, Sha Tin and Chai Wan this month.

Senior Inspector Chau Chong-wai of Kowloon West's anti-triad unit said: 'Employees of the two funeral companies have been assaulted as a result of the business disputes.

'An office in Hunghom was set on fire and another was damaged when its gates were rammed by a vehicle,' he said.

He said the row erupted when a new company started two months ago. 'It's a high profit-making business and the new company is apparently trying to have their share of the cake,' Senior Inspector Chau said.

Of the 52 arrested, 14 were under 16.

They were being questioned last night.

Two brothers got into a fight with their sister during a funeral for their grandmother in a Hunghom funeral home yesterday.

The fight, which also involved a 30-year-old male friend of the woman, erupted in the International Funeral Parlour in Cheong Hang Street at about 10.30 am.
