Students can from today get extra help learning English for a big exam - via the radio waves.

   The New Revised Radio Certificate English for the HKCEE English Language (Syllabus B) involves radio programmes and a learning pack.

  It is a joint effort by the British Council, RTHK and publishers Longman Asia.

   The aim is to provide professional advice and lively exercise in preparation for the HKCEE English paper.

  British Council programme co-ordinator Judy Dendy said the programme would be useful to students because it taught effective study techniques and gave practical experience at tackling the HKCEE English paper.

   Students need to buy a study pack which contains a course book, a book of sample exam papers and a cassette tape.

   These they use while following the weekly radio programme, which will be broadcast every Tuesday, starting today, on RTHK's Channel Five, from 7.30 pm to 8 pm.

   One special feature of the course is a free assignment-marking service offered by British Council English language teachers.

  Students can submit their work, ask the teachers questions and get their comments.

    By the end of the course, students should have made significant headway with their English skills, Ms Dendy said.

   'It's a breakthrough in English teaching and learning.

  'Students get guidance and are inspired to work harder on their English, and tuning into a radio programme is fun.

  'Learning this way, away from the classroom, is different and enjoyable,' she added.

      Feedback about the programme, which was first launched two years ago, had been encouraging, both by comments from students and teachers and exam results, Ms Dendy said.

   Many of those who tuned in last year said the programmes and study pack were very useful and helped them develop their critical thinking while giving them practical experience in preparing for the exam.

  Modern study methods were marked by the variety of approaches taken to try and pass exams.

  After-school tuition classes are the most popular way of trying to improve students' chances.

    Ms Dendy said any approach that produced results was worthwhile.
