Time to make room for a statement piece in your home
Bold and distinctive items ranging from furniture to artwork will grab attention and dictate your décor scheme

A statement piece of home décor can transform a room, giving a boost to an otherwise bland interior or anchoring a busy scheme while reflecting your personality and style.
Picking up an item that speaks to you in a showroom, gallery or curios shop is only the start. The key to a happy and long-lasting relationship with your home is to ensure that it looks just as good when it’s displayed within the confines of your space.
“A statement piece adds character, a wow factor. It's a conversation starter as it draws your eye as you enter the room,” says interior designer Anji Connell, founder of ACID+. “It can be bold, unique, eclectic, provocative or political – perhaps an unusual or distinctive piece of furniture, a painting, sculpture or an objet d’art. It can also be a collection of things you love, such as vases or plates in one colour, colour combination or interesting pattern.”

The piece or collection does not always need to be in your face – it can be nestled away, waiting to surprise and delight visitors. The important thing to consider here, according to Connell, is that it enhances your home’s overall design.
But if it is the focal point of the room - such as a large, abstract panting - the designer’s advice is to decorate around it. “I’d keep a more neutral decorating scheme, adding colour from the painting to the room as accents, say in the sofa cushions,” she says. “If the piece has bold colours, the walls of the room should be neutral.”
