St Joseph's College suffered a surprise defeat in their fight to defend the Division One Grade A football league title.
The school's Grade A squad lost 1-0 to arch-rivals La Salle College at Shekkipmei Park. Mid-way into the second half, La Salle scrambled the lone goal following a momentary lapse in the St Joseph's defence. The defending champions made an all-out effort in the last 20 minutes, but to no avail.
'Our forwards wasted several chances. They were quite nervous in the opening match,' said St Joseph's coach, Wu Wan-kwok.
'This defeat should put our boys on full alert in their second game against title-contenders Island School,' said school principal Brother Favier Thomas.
To make up for the disappointment, the St Joseph's Grade B and C teams both scraped a 1-0 victory over their La Salle College rivals.
Down in Happy Valley, the St Louis Grade A team beat Chong Gene Hang College in a 2-1 victory.
