I refer to the letter headlined, 'Asians victims of racist abuse Down Under' (South China Morning Post, December 16), by Nancy Lau, an ex-Hong Kong resident now living in Sydney.
I lived in Hong Kong for 40 years and am now here on holiday. I also live in Sydney and am sure many of the things Ms Lau wrote about do happen, but I found her letter one-sided.
To begin with, Pauline Hanson in her maiden parliamentary speech did not discriminate against Asians. What she did say was she wanted all immigration into Australia stopped as we have a large unemployment problem 'amongst other problems'. Yes, she did say that many Asians are forming ghettoes and that the Aboriginals should get off their backsides and do something for themselves - not necessarily in those words.
The media and many politicians in Australia have distorted what Pauline Hanson had to say.
Australia with its multi-culturism has about 158 different nationalities. There is a suburb in Sydney called Cabramatta. I understand it was a sleepy little hamlet once but now, with a large Vietnamese population there, there is so much crime which includes drugs, murder, stabbings and kidnapping. No mention of that in Ms Lau's letter.
Yes, the new settlers have brought a lot of culture to Australia but many have brought a lot of crime. Ms Lau mistakenly states that the media, notably newspapers and television, support Pauline Hanson.
