Hong Kong owes its success to the desire and ability of its corporations and people to search for excellence, overcome difficulties and challenges, discover and utilise resources to ensure progress, be down-to-earth, practical and flexible and a strong determination to succeed.
Hong Kong's international prominence rests on its ability and willingness to accept and make best use of the differences and strength of both East and West and its readiness to be well equipped for global interchange, co-operation and fair competition.
The Asian Industrial Technology Congress 1997, as the most significant technology showcase ever held in Hong Kong, promises to evidence the territory's role in promoting international co-operation through technology transfer.
It will undoubtedly make a positive contribution to upgrading the technology capability of industries in Hong Kong, China and the region. I am sure that all participants will find the more than 150 new technologies exciting and their involvement in the congress rewarding. As honorary president of the congress, I congratulate Hong Kong Polytechnic University for taking the initiative to organise this important event.
