The fight against inflation would remain the No 1 task for Beijing in regulating the economy, two economists close to the Government wrote yesterday.

The People's Daily yesterday published an article by noted economists, Liu Guoguang and Liu Shucheng , saying that the central Government must stick to its anti-inflation economic policy.

In addition, the Government must maintain an overall balance of the economy and an appropriately tight monetary policy. Instead of prescribing dramatic economic cures, the Government should adjust the economy through fine-tuning, the economists wrote.

Both scholars are economists with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and advise the Government on economic policies.

Officials are drafting various reports to the National People's Congress including the 1997 economic plan and budget.

The economists said China should maintain its present economic policy until the country had completed the transition from a centrally planned system to a market-oriented system.
