Master French mentor Patrick Biancone appears to have another talented bunch of griffins, if yesterday's revealing Sha Tin grass trial session is anything to rely upon. And while Biancone's griffins were impressing so, too, was his admirable veteran Class One performer Helene Star who took the opening heat and is a confirmed runner under 137 pounds in Sunday's feature event, the San Miguel Silver Tankard. This means the weights do not rise. Helene Star dashed clear of the Lawrie Fownes-trained China Cruise to win his heat in good style. But jockey Wendyll Woods is likely to be riding China Cruise significantly harder in the San Miguel than he was in this trial. China Cruise went to the line hard held to confirm earlier trackwork impressions that he's absolutely flying. David Oughton introduced his Class One English import Victory Star in this opening trial. It is too early to say whether he has acclimatised and he does face a race against time for the Derby, but this was an encouraging effort. Biancone's griffins to impress were, in trial order, Time Well, Bumper Storm and Brilliant Star. Time Well was not asked for too much by Eric Legrix, but he did go very smoothly to the line to run third to the ridden-out Jonka in the second heat. Wong Tang-ping's Flowers Comrade showed good speed and never came off the bit to run second. David Hayes' Strikers was always on the bit, but then he is a Class One horse and was in against a motley collection. Bumper Storm clocked a very reasonable one minute and 00.6 seconds in coming from last to first in the fourth heat. The Irish-bred colt was slowly into stride and must have stood up the leaders some four lengths. But the further they went, the better he went and he came through for a quality win from Hayes' Take Charge who went to the line under a double handful. Oughton's Gaylord was another to finish very strongly in this heat while Tony P. H. Chan's Spring Time, a Class Two import, confirmed some fluent work though he may just need his first run in the territory. Brilliant Star trialled from trap to line without coming off the bit. He ran home sixth to Stephen Leung's Sky Luck in the final heat looking another smart recruit. The Class Two-rated Irish import Sky Luck won the last heat well and should progress for the trial in which Fownes' New Zealand recruit En Rapport, who didn't do too much on his debut behind Grassland Star down the straight 1,000-metre chute, showed a lot more dash for the application of blinkers. John Moore's American-bred griffin Master Magic showed excellent natural speed to win the third trial eased down by the top English rider Kevin Darley. Master Magic clocked the slowest time of the morning, but the manner of his win - he strolled home - marked him down as a future griffin winner as he has so much natural pace. He beat his stablemate, Victory Mount, and both these were confirming their earlier work on the all-weather surface and in jump outs. David Hill's import Supreme Bases went pleasantly in behind them as he should have done for a Class Two horse. Fownes also took the fifth heat with All Thrills, an acquisition from Ivan Allan's stable who is going well. Ricky Yiu's English import Feel Legend and Chan's Irish import Willie Way trialled well behind All Thrills as did Allan's Oriental Express, who had smart form in England and is Mr Vitality's owner Larry Yung's hope for this season's Derby.
