City University is producing a rising class of 'broad-minded, well-trained and dedicated professionals to meet the needs of Hong Kong of the next century', according to its president, Professor Chang Hsin-kang.
Professor Chang told its academic awards ceremony it would become the 'hub' of quality university education. He said more mainland students would come to study in the 'pleasant and stimulating environment' of the university.
Future graduates should aim to be more proficient in English and Chinese, and should take pride in their Chinese heritage, he added.
He said future graduates would be better acquainted with their own and other cultures.
Professor Chang predicted the handover would be a success and that Hong Kong's increasingly well-educated population would be 'proud of our new identity and ready to contribute to a re-energised Chinese nation'.
'At the dawn of the new millennium, Hong Kong will become a leading Chinese city with a strong international outlook,' he said.
