I WRITE with regard to the South China Morning Post 's coverage of the pedal kart marathon at Victoria Park over the weekend. The race was organised by the Round Table for charity.
The colour front page photo of Legislator Mr Peter Wong Hong-yuen, with his dislocated elbow, was certainly touching, and I take nothing away from either him or his team.
They more than earned their RTHK Sportsmanship Award. However, where were the winners? We had to search through the paper to page six, where a much smaller group photo was shown of the teams from Island School.
Not only had these teenagers beaten their own record from last year, but also had won against cars built with much more adult input and money.
We read stories in the papers every week about teenage suicides, teens on drugs, and alcoholism among young people. These students spent their weekend, (throughout the night as well as daylight hours), pedalling their hearts out for charity, and for their school. I am certain that Mr Wong would agree with me that these young people deserve more recognition than this.
If we wish the next generation to leave alcohol and drugs alone, if we wish them to pursue healthy, active lives, if we wish them to care for those less fortunate than themselves - then we have to promote events such as this, and allow our young people to bask in the limelight, when they have rightfully earned their place there.
